About OweNo
Split bills, not friendships.
OweNo is the free iOS and Android app that makes splitting expenses effortless — for friends, housemates, travel groups, and families. No awkward “you owe me” texts. No forgotten IOUs. Just fair and square, every time.
Why we built it
We've all been there — a trip ends and someone's quietly out of pocket while the group chat goes silent. Splitting costs with people you care about shouldn't be stressful. OweNo fixes that. It tracks who paid, who owes, and the simplest way for everyone to settle up.
It's completely free. We don't sell your data. We built it because we wanted it to exist.
What it does
- Groups — Create groups with a name, emoji, and colour. Pin favourites, organise members into sub-groups, and keep every shared expense in one place.
- Travel Mode — A dedicated mode for trips, with a built-in Itinerary tab to plan stops and activities alongside your expenses.
- Expense Splitting — Split equally or with custom amounts per person. Scan a receipt with your camera and OweNo reads the total for you.
- Multi-Currency — Live exchange rates mean every balance is shown in your group's home currency, automatically.
- Smart Settlements — Our algorithm works out the fewest transfers needed to settle all debts. Everyone knows exactly who pays whom.
- Invite Links & QR Codes — Share one link. Anyone who taps it is instantly added to your group.
- Overview — One screen showing your net balance across every group.
- Push Notifications — Instant alerts when someone adds an expense, settles a debt, or joins your group.
- Archive — Finished with a group? Archive it. Your history is preserved forever.
Coming from another splitting app
Most people find OweNo while already using something else, so here is the honest version of how it differs.
If you use Splitwise — the part that usually prompts the search is the paid tier: an ad-free experience and unlimited daily expenses belong to Splitwise Pro. In OweNo there is no Pro. No ads, no subscription, no cap on how many expenses you add in a day, and no feature held back for upgraders — receipt scanning, live multi-currency conversion, Travel Mode itineraries, shared shopping lists, budgets and polls are simply in the app.
If you use Tricount — Tricount is free as well, and deliberately minimal: a group, the expenses, the balances. That is genuinely enough for a weekend away. OweNo covers the same ground and adds what a long trip or a shared flat tends to need — a receipt you can scan instead of type, an itinerary sitting next to what it costs, a budget to watch, a shopping list everyone can edit, and a poll for when the group cannot agree.
What is the same everywhere — none of these apps move your money, OweNo included. They keep the record and work out who pays whom; you settle up by bank transfer, cash, or whatever you already use. Anyone promising otherwise is describing a payments app, not an expense splitter.
